Prince George — City council candidate Shawn Petriw is encouraging the residents of Prince George to send a strong, clear message to the BC Lottery Corporation that Prince George will not be bullied into making a decision that is bad for the community.
"It appears to me that money, a deadline and a threat of moving is being used to force a decision that is not in our best interest. Our community invested thousands of hours and nearly $300,000 in developing the Official Community Plan and we're not going to sell it out just because the Lottery Corporation prefers a highway location. Prince George wants its casino downtown, and that's where it should be."
Mr. Petriw also feels the Lottery Corporation may be acting contrary to the spirit of the Gaming Control Act which requires the approval of the municipality over land use planning.
"We are being enticed to change our land use decisions already made in the OCP. It's as if they think money talks and the OCP walks."
Mr. Petriw questions why the Pine Valley Driving Range land would be considered, never mind aggressively pursued, given the constraints of the OCP and the land's proximity to two schools.
"Perhaps Victoria is more interested in our money than in our community."
